GRIT027 — ✅ Ready to hit the road and head to its new home on Monday!

GRIT030 — Our big 24ft twin-bunk family van is powering ahead, with the internal overheads now fitted, exterior capping completed, and the roof rails and spoiler installed. She’s looking the part!

GRIT031 — Another Extreme Series couples van rolling forward nicely. The floor and external extrusions are in, and the cabinetry is prepped and ready to be mounted next week.

Next week is going to be a huge one for the workshop, and we can’t wait to see even more progress roll out! 🔧✨

Let’s Explain Our Water System 💦

You may have noticed that filling and drawing from your water tanks looks a little different compared to the traditional method of filling each tank individually, so let’s break down exactly how it works.

Filling
Plug your mains water hose into the single hose connection located on the right-hand side of your van, then open your plumbing hatch.
From here, turn the tank-fill valve open. If you want to fill one tank, simply select the corresponding valve. If you wish to fill all tanks together, open all valves at the same time.

Using Water
To use water inside your van, close the tank-fill valve and open the valve for the tank you want to draw from, or open all of them if you prefer to use them jointly.
Once your valves are set, switch your pump on and you are ready to go.
Keep in mind, the system will always draw from the tank closest to the pump first. When a tank becomes empty, close its valve and continue using the remaining tanks.

Designated Drinking Water
To fill your drinking-water tank, open the tank-fill valve and only open the drinking-water valve.
To use water through the dedicated drinking-water tap, keep this valve closed, however, switch on the designated drinking-water pump.
If you prefer to use the drinking-water tank as standard water, simply turn off the drinking-water pump and open the drinking-water valve. The main pump will then draw from this tank like normal.

Hot Water Isolation
This valve only needs to be closed during servicing of the hot-water system. At all other times, it should remain open.

Mains Water:
Leaving the tank fill valve closed, plugging directly into the vans fill point will give the van mains pressure, you will not be required to turn any pumps on.

🔥 GRIT025 — Completed final QA testing and is just about ready for handover!
🔥 GRIT027 — Exterior is buttoned up and the final internal fixout is underway. Not long now until handover!
🔥 GRIT030 — Walls and roof are on, and internal overheads + fitout are powering ahead.
🔥 GRIT031 — Rolled into the shed with Cruisemaster BCS suspension and water tanks already fitted. The floor will be down by the time you’re reading this!

The boys will have well and truly earned their Chrissy beers once we get these final builds out and wrap up a huge 2025 at Offroad Grit! 🍻

☀️ Why We Use High-Voltage Solar Panels ☀️

When it comes to powering your adventures off-grid, we’re big believers in doing things smarter — not just following what’s always been done.

That’s why we run high-voltage Solar panels in 440W and 510W sizes. These panels deliver more power per unit, meaning:
⚡️ Higher output from fewer panels
🌤️ Better performance in low-light conditions
🧊 Cooler operating temps = improved efficiency

We’ve also designed our mounting system so the panels sit on a slight angle — this helps water run off easily instead of pooling on top, keeping the surface cleaner and the system performing at its best.

We’ve found that using multiple smaller, low-voltage panels can create more wiring complexity, more joins, and more room for loss — and that just doesn’t line up with how we like to build things.

It’s our opinion, but we reckon fewer, higher-quality panels, mounted right and built to work harder, is the smarter way to stay off-grid longer and charge faster. 💪

GRIT030 – A massive 24-footer featuring twin bunks and an offset bed! The internal fitout has just kicked off — and let’s just say, there are a few tricky features in this one that we can’t wait to show you 👀

GRIT031 & GRIT032 – The boys in the Hot Works Shed have been on fire this week, knocking out two more chassis ready to head off for hot-dip galvanising next week! The production line is rolling strong 💪

Why We Don’t Use Checker Plate Under Our Water Tanks

We get asked this a lot 👇 Here’s why Offroad Grit RV doesn’t cover our tanks with checker plate or guards:

❌ Dust & Mud Trap
Checker plate creates a pocket that holds dust, when wet, turning to mud which is adding unnecessary weight to your van.

⚠️ Risk of Damage
Sharp rocks or debris can get wedged between the guard and the tank, potentially rubbing and wearing through over time.

💪 No Need for a Guard
Our tanks are rotomoulded up to 10mm thick, built tough to handle serious off-road conditions, strength is in the tank itself, not a cover.

When it comes to durability, less is more ✅

🤔Do You Really Need a Carafan DRS System in Your Offroad Grit RV?

Ever heard of the Carafan Dust Reduction System (DRS)? It’s designed to create positive pressure inside your caravan while you’re driving, helping to keep out red dust and road grime, a big deal when you’re tackling outback tracks or dusty roads.

At Offroad Grit, our vans are already built tough and sealed tight. Our composite construction, dustproof seals, and clever ventilation mean many owners find a Carafan DRS system isn’t essential. But… if you’re doing a lot of high-speed outback travel or want an extra layer of dust protection, a DRS can be a great add-on for peace of mind.

✅ Pros: Helps reduce dust ingress on really dusty tracks, especially at highway speeds.
✅ Cons: Extra cost, installation space, and it won’t replace good sealing practices.

Our take: You don’t need one for most touring situations in an Offroad Grit RV, our sealing does a brilliant job but if you’re doing serious outback miles on bulldust-heavy roads, it’s a solid optional upgrade.

🔧 Putting the Garmin System to the Test 🔧

In our latest episode, we pushed the Garmin Switch system hard on one of the most technical tracks yet — and it proved why it’s a game-changer for off-grid caravanning.

This unit isn’t just a pretty screen. It gives us:
✅ Live monitoring of the water tanks
✅ Battery percentage and charge status while also switching the inverter.
✅ Switching for lights and pumps
✅ Tyre pressure monitoring
✅ Full control of our air-conditioning
✅Plus so much more!

…but where it really shone was the airbag suspension control. On a steep, off-camber section at Glasshouse, we used the Garmin to remotely adjust the airbags and level the van just enough to drive it off the bank safely.

BEHIND THE BUILD: WHY WE DON’T USE TIMBER

You’ve probably seen fancy van interiors that look good but what happens after tons of corrugations, coastal humidity, and outback dust?

Here’s the Grit difference:
✅ PVC-Versaboard cabinetry – Our cabinetry is built using PVC foamboard (Versaboard) with a hard-wearing laminated finish — no timber, no compromise. It's 100% waterproof, meaning it won’t swell or rot if exposed to moisture, humidity, or spills. It’s lightweight, reducing overall van weight, and thermally stable, so it won’t expand or shrink with temperature swings. Plus, it holds screws tightly, so your hinges, latches, and drawers stay solid for years — even after long days on corrugations.

✅ Solid Corian® benchtops – We use genuine Corian®, a premium solid-surface material — not laminate over chipboard. Corian is non-porous, so it won’t absorb water, bacteria, or odours. It’s heat-resistant, impact-resistant, and seamless, which means no bubbling, cracking, or peeling over time. It’s also repairable, so if it ever does get scratched, it can be refinished rather than replaced. It’s the kind of benchtop you want when you're hundreds of k’s from the nearest kitchen shop..

We took an offcut from a caravan door — just a raw piece of our fibreglass composite with XPS core, no frame, no cabinets — and parked around 400kg of our EXTREME SERIES chassis right on top of it. 🤷‍♂️

We build every van using fibreglass composite panels with a closed-cell XPS foam core — no timber, no shortcuts.

✅ Water-resistant & rot-proof
XPS is a closed-cell foam, meaning it won’t absorb moisture. Paired with sealed fibreglass skins, you get a structure that resists mould, swelling, and water damage — even in wet or humid conditions.

One of our latest builds is moving through the works:

🛠️ Floor’s down – fibreglass-infused, CNC cut to suit each van.
🧰 Cabinetry – CNC cut PVC and made in-house to fit perfectly first time. No timber here!
⚡ Electrical board – being prepped with Victron gear throughout.
💧 Plumbing hatch – assembled using John Guest fittings.

Not the flashy stuff, but it’s the foundation of a van that works the way it should.

At Offroad Grit, we build caravans to go the distance — and that starts with the chassis.

We use 305-grade steel that's hot-dip galvanised after fabrication. This process gives a complete and thick zinc coating, including all welds, inside and out — making it far more durable and corrosion-resistant than pre-galvanised steel with a painted finish.

Want that tough black look? We offer Bullyliner coating over the top — a flexible, rubberised protective layer that’s rugged, chip-resistant and easy to repair. It gives the best of both worlds: long-lasting protection and a clean finish.
